Age on its own does not make an installation unsafe, and an older board does not automatically need replacing. What matters is its condition and the protection it provides: signs of damage or overheating, burnt fuse carriers, missing or limited RCD protection, or circuits that have been altered over the years without records are all reasons to have the installation assessed properly.
Where it suits the installation, a modern consumer unit can include RCD or RCBO protection and, where appropriate, surge protection. How that is arranged depends on the circuits and the property rather than being the same in every home. Cameron will set out the options and what each one actually achieves.
How the work usually goes
A straightforward replacement is often a one-day job, but that depends on what the testing shows. Cameron will confirm what is involved for your property before anything is booked.

Straight advice about pre-existing faults
Occasionally testing reveals something that has been sitting quietly in the wiring for years — damp affecting an outbuilding circuit or deteriorated insulation, for example. Modern protective devices are more sensitive and will pick this up. Testing before any changeover means it is found and discussed with you, and priced, rather than becoming an unexpected extra on the day.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
Many domestic replacements are completed within a day, including testing and certification. If earthing or bonding upgrades are needed, or testing shows a problem on an existing circuit, Cameron will tell you how that affects the work before it is booked.
Will I be without power all day?
Power is off for the changeover and while circuits are tested, typically for a few hours. Cameron will plan the timings with you, which is useful if you work from home or have young children.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate with the schedule of test results — the document to keep for selling, letting or insurance purposes.
Does my fuse board have to be replaced because it is old?
No. Age alone is not a reason for replacement. Inspection and testing establishes the condition of the installation and the level of protection it gives, and Cameron will explain plainly whether replacement is a genuine improvement or whether something more targeted is appropriate.
What about Building Regulations?
Some electrical work in a home is notifiable under the Building Regulations. Cameron will discuss the requirements that apply to your particular work and the appropriate route to satisfy them before anything is agreed.
